Ramona, Individual Support Worker

"My job is challenging. It's especially difficult because of staff shortages."

I work in a group home with adults who are severely mentally and physically disabled. Part of my job is to integrate residents into the community. I take them shopping, swimming or out for an ice cream. Things most of us take for granted. I bathe and dress them and cook meals. I administer medication and I perform basic nursing duties, like cathetering maintenance, and tube feeding. I have accreditation in first aid, crisis intervention, self-defense and drug administration, among others. You need training and knowledge to help these individuals have a rewarding quality of life.

Each day is different. I never know what I'm going to be faced with. It might be a medical emergency or a resident may become aggressive. My job is challenging. It's especially difficult because of staff shortages. We use many temporary workers. We no longer have job security. Sometimes I work alone, which limits the activities I am able to do with the individuals.
