Kiran, Licensed Practical Nurse

"Most of all, my job requires common sense. It also takes patience and a good listening ear."

I'm pictured here helping a new mother but these days I care for seniors living in low-income housing. My job is to advocate for them. I reassure them that their voice is being heard. I conduct head-to-toe physical examinations. I change dressings, check that they're taking their medications and following care plans, change their catheters and give them injections. I arrange transportation to appointments for them. I refer them to community resources and offer support if they are depressed or suicidal.

Most of all, my job requires common sense. It also takes patience and a good listening ear. Because of what I do, my low-income seniors can remain living independently for longer.
