Christine, Conservation Officer

"We always seem to be short-staffed. It's tough when only a couple of us are patrolling the entire area."

My role is to enforce regulations in Kananaskis Park. I make sure people keep safe and wildlife and humans stay out of conflict. Usually people understand, but sometimes we get undesirables and that can be dangerous. I carry a side arm and enforcement equipment and I'd like to see pay that reflects what other enforcement officers receive.

Every day is a challenge. I never know what is going to happen. I spend three or four days at a time in the backcountry patrolling the campgrounds and checking for injured wildlife. In the summer I patrol on foot; in the winter I ski. We always seem to be short-staffed. It's tough when only a couple of us are patrolling the entire area, especially if someone goes missing or gets hurt in the backcountry. That's our biggest challenge. It can be a life and death situation.
