"My job is tough and complex. My working environment is volatile. I put myself at risk every day."
I work on the frontline overseeing daily operations in the correctional facility. I serve as a role model, mentor, communicator, problem solver, and am responsible for protecting the offenders and the Correctional Peace Officers in the facility. My job is tough and complex. My working environment is volatile. I put myself at risk every day. When I come to work, I expect conflict. I have to be extremely careful and follow strict guidelines. We need to be vigilant 24/7, looking for homemade weapons and separating gang members to avoid conflict. Infection from diseases like HIV and hepatitis is a constant hazard.
I de-escalate violent situations by being assertive and persuasive. I ensure offenders follow routines and participate in prescribed programs. I tell them immediately if they're on the wrong track. Sometimes their behaviour needs adjusting. All my staff have strong human relations and communications skills. Correctional facilities are overcrowded, making our work even more difficult.
