I help students register for programs at Bow Valley College. We have a large international population. I interact with the students by email, snail mail, phone, and in person. I respond to their requests about grey areas in the admission process. I need strong communications skills and the ability to multi-task and juggle deadlines. Sometimes the college implements radical program changes suddenly. I have to be up to date on them. That's the most challenging part of my job, especially now when because of government cutbacks, we no longer offer some programs and need to charge for others that used to be free.
It's my responsibility to tell students about the changes. That's very difficult when their dreams have been crushed because they can't take the program they've been counting on. It's very stressful, for them and for me. Sometimes a student calls me to thank me for helping them achieve their dreams. That's rewarding.
